Roethlisberger’s 2-yard TD pass — in the fourth down — to Freiermuth put the Steelers 15-10 up with 11:04 remaining. Freiermuth initially swung his throw, but saved it and dropped both feet behind the end zone.

Without his kick, Tomlin was forced to score 2 goals for the second time, but Roethlisberger’s pass was not complete.

The Browns were in position to potentially take the lead, but the resolute Landry was stripped by former Cleveland midfielders Joe Schobert and T.J. Watt recovered the ball with 6:04 remaining.

“I’ve seen Joe play like that for years, especially when he played for Cleveland,” said Watt, who also owns 1 1/2 sacks. “I just fell into the ball.”

Mayfield, who returned to the lineup this week after missing a game with a left shoulder injury, got the ball back with 4:22 remaining. The Browns got the Steelers 26, but Rashard Higgins was canceled out for a poor start and Landry, who had an early pass in the drive, was unable to secure a high throw under the fourth with 1:53 remaining.

“It’s on all of us,” Mayfield said. “Everyone will point the finger at some games but the truth is we didn’t get the rhythm today. We hit our feet a few times – penalties and didn’t make the game we needed to win.”
